A Life-changing Doctor’s Visit

A personal story shows us why it’s so important to “Be in charge of your own health.”

Almost three years ago, Jackie Ritter, Corporate Travel Manager, completed her annual wellness exam. As part of the exam, she completed a schedule mammogram. She showed no signs or symptoms that anything was wrong. She didn’t feel any different than usual

The mammogram was a preventive exam. The results concerned her doctor, so Jackie was sent for an ultrasound to get a closer look at her lymph nodes, then a biopsy. The biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Jackie was shocked. She had no symptoms. No pain.

With regular exams, the doctor kept an eye on the size of the tumors to determine appropriate treatment. Chemotherapy eventually started in September 2020, once the pandemic restrictions allowed for it. After eight rounds of treatment and multiple drug changes (because of allergic reactions), in May 2021, Jackie is in remission!

She shares her story because she wants everyone to understand that sometimes we don’t show symptoms that signal bigger issues. When you complete regular wellness visits, age-appropriate preventive care and engage with your doctor about your family’s medical history, your interactions and small changes in your health numbers may signal to your doctor that something needs more attention.

“Be in charge of your own health,” Jackie emphasizes. She cites a powerful quote that sums it up: “If you don’t make time for your wellness, you’ll be forced to make time for your illness.”
