Kevin Miller
General Manager, Cleveland
Accepts challenges with confidence. Approaches everything with purpose. Does the work to make a difference.
Kevin Miller started his Olympic Steel career as an intern through Kent State University back in 1999, then began working part-time while he completed his degree. The decision to join the company when he graduated was an easy one. Kevin welcomed the opportunity to take on the role of a full-time staff accountant. From there, he worked his way up the ranks and now serves as the General Manager in Cleveland.
One of the keys to his success? Never backing away from a challenge, even if feeling unprepared. He believes that’s true at Olympic Steel – and in life itself. Kevin says, “You must want to make a difference, and that can’t happen until you are willing to jump in when the need presents itself.” He adds that it’s important to have confidence in yourself and your coworkers when putting yourself in the middle of an issue.
Kevin believes you have to start by knowing your end goal when facing a challenge. Only then will you be able to map out a plan to get there. Then, he says, everything you do must be ON PURPOSE. Kevin adds that it’s also important to attack issues one at a time. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when issues are coming at you from all angles. But, if you slow down, stay focused and advance toward your objectives – even if only a little every day – you’ll eventually get where you want to go.
For those who want to advance their careers at Olympic Steel, Kevin offers this advice: “Become the person with experiences. I have done this in my career, and it has served me well and enabled me to sharpen my skills across many departments. That has made me a better teammate and employee for the benefit of Olympic Steel.”
