AAPI Heritage Month: Honoring Culture and Contributions
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrates the cultures, histories and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. It also encourages learning and appreciation for the communities that help shape society.
Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month gives us an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many cultures, traditions and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders throughout U.S. history. The AAPI community includes people with roots in East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Pacific Islands, representing a wide range of backgrounds, languages and experiences. The month of May was chosen partly to remember the arrival of early Japanese immigrants in the 1800s and the Chinese laborers who helped build the transcontinental railroad.
AAPI Heritage Month is also a chance to learn more about the individuals and communities who have helped shape our country in meaningful ways. From advances in science, medicine, technology, business and the arts to leadership in education, public service and sports, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made lasting contributions that continue to influence everyday life.
People like Patsy Mink helped reshape American education and women’s rights through Title IX, Bruce Lee challenged stereotypes and changed how Asian people were represented in popular culture, and athletes like Shohei Ohtani and Naomi Osaka became global stars whose influence goes beyond sports.
The month encourages us to celebrate diversity while also taking time to listen, learn and better understand the unique experiences and histories within AAPI communities. Whether it’s exploring different cultural traditions, supporting AAPI-owned businesses, trying new foods or learning about influential historical figures, even small actions can help foster greater appreciation and connection.
Celebrations might include Hawaiian lei-making, Filipino tinikling dances, Korean drumming, Indian classical dance or a neighborhood night market filled with food and music.
Most importantly, AAPI Heritage Month reminds us that our differences strengthen our communities and workplaces. By recognizing and valuing the diverse perspectives around us, we help create a more inclusive environment where everyone feels seen, respected and supported.
