Cybersecurity Starts with You
Cybersecurity Month was created to help people understand that online safety is an essential part of everyday life. Follow four simple steps to help boost your online safety.
Cybersecurity Awareness Month began in 2004, when the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) launched the initiative in partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The goal was to help people understand that staying safe online is an essential part of everyday life and a shared responsibility.
This year’s theme is Don’t Make it Easy for Them. The NCA encourages us to make life difficult for cybercriminals by following online safety tips that help protect you and your information while you’re online.
“Staying safe online isn’t about making one perfect decision. It’s about building habits and repeating them consistently in the small moments that happen every day,” says the NCA.
Small actions make a big difference, and here are four steps to take now to boost your online safety:
- Use strong passwords and a password manager
- Turn on multifactor authentication
- Recognize and report scams – Using your company email account? You can easily report phishing attempts using the Phish Alert button.
- Keep software current
As an organization, Olympic Steel and Ryerson employ these security tactics and more to protect employees and the Company from security threats. But we’re only as strong as the people who choose to adhere to the security measures in place.
If you follow the tips above and pay close attention to details in your emails or online, you’ll minimize your risk. If you see something suspicious – say something. It’s better to report a harmless message than to let something go through that should’ve been stopped.
