UNUM Voluntary Benefit Options

UNUM offers Accident Insurance and Critical Illness coverage for employees and dependents to supplement costs associated with hospitalization, accidental injury or serious health conditions.

UNUM offers two voluntary benefit options available through UNUM – Accident Insurance and Critical Illness. Voluntary benefits are supplemental plans that pay you a cash benefit in the event you or a covered family member experience a hospitalization, an accidental injury or are diagnosed with a serious, specific condition.

The cash benefit can be used for any covered expense or can be saved in case you are off work due to an injury or illness. The premiums you pay for the plans are paid on an after-tax basis, so you will not owe taxes on the amount paid to you. Under each plan, you and your covered dependents can receive an annual $50 cash benefit when you submit proof of your completed preventive care visits and/or related services (it’s a one-time payment per person, not a $50 payment for each of the preventive screenings).

If you’re not already enrolled, you’ll be able to do that during Open Enrollment in November (for coverage in 2026). Here’s a brief description for each type of coverage and where you can go to learn more:

ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Accident Insurance pays a cash benefit for the injury and treatment of minor or catastrophic accidental injuries. Common injuries in this category include burns, concussions, dislocations, fractures and lacerations. Expenses related to surgeries, hospitalizations and recovery are also benefit-eligible. Learn more at SteelPerks.com.

CRITICAL ILLNESS PLAN

If you are diagnosed with one of the covered conditions, the plan will pay you a lump sum benefit. Coverage for your child(ren) is automatically included when you enroll yourself. Spouse coverage is also available. Learn more at SteelPerks.com.

  • Covered conditions include (but are not limited to) heart attack, stroke, organ failure, cancer, HIV, ALS, dementia, MS and Parkinson's.
  • Covered conditions for children include (but are not limited to) cerebral palsy, cleft lip/palate, cystic fibrosis, down syndrome and spina bifida.
