Social Media Made Simple: Getting Seen

You don’t need tons of followers to make an impact on social. You just need to take a few extra steps to be seen. Ready to go beyond just scrolling to make social media work for you, 24/7, without overthinking it? We’ve got you covered!

Welcome to Article 2 of Social Media Made Simple—where we’re breaking down three simple, effective ways to expand your reach and connect with the right people: tagging, hashtags, and engagement.

Our first article introduced how social media can be a tool–not just for scrolling, but for building connections, staying informed, and showcasing your expertise. Now, let’s look at a few actions that can help your presence go further.

What is Tagging?

Tagging is when you mention someone in a post or comment by using the at symbol (@) (e.g., @OlympicSteel). When you tag someone (a person or organization), they’re notified—making it more likely that they (and their connections) will see, like, and share your post.

When to tag:

  • You’re mentioning a colleague, customer, or business partner
  • You’re giving credit for a post, idea, article, or image
  • You want someone to see or engage with your post

Think of tagging as dropping your post into someone else’s feed. It increases visibility with minimal effort.

Don’t forget to tag us when relevant – we’ve got thousands of engaged followers in our network!

  • LinkedIn: @olympic-steel
  • Facebook: @OlympicSteel
  • Instagram: @olympic.steel

What are Hashtags?

Hashtags are keywords in a social media post that are preceded by the octothorpe symbol (#)–also known as the pound sign (e.g., #SteelIndustry or #OlympicSteel). They serve as labels for specific topics, making your content easier to find—even by people who don’t follow you.

Fun fact: some Olympic Steel employees found their jobs through a simple hashtag search!

Use them when:

  • You're posting about a topic others may be interested in (like safety, innovation, or manufacturing)
  • You want your post to be part of a broader conversation
  • You’re supporting a campaign or event (like #NationalSafetyMonth or #IamOlympicSteel).

Tips for using hashtags:

  • Use 1–3 per post
  • Keep them simple and specific – think #ManufacturingMatters vs. #Work
  • Don’t overdo it. Too many hashtags can distract from your message.

Try starting with some of our brand hashtags:

  • #ManufacturingIndustry – Connects with others in the field
  • #NotOnlySteel – Highlights our unique brand, capabilities, and offerings
  • #IamOlympicSteel – Showcases our people, culture and community
  • #OlympicSteel – Our go-to for Company news and updates

Example

Let’s say you’re sharing a photo from a recent safety training:

“Proud to be part of a team that puts safety first! 👷‍♂️ Thanks @OlympicSteel and @IndustrialSafetyandTrainingServices for a great training session. #IamOlympicSteel #SafetyFirst #NationalSafetyMonth”

In one short post, you’ve:

  • Recognized key people (tagging)
  • Boosted visibility (tagging + hashtags)
  • Joined an industry conversation (hashtags)
  • Strengthened your professional presence

And, chances are you’ll even pick up new followers/connections!

Want To Give It a Try?

Engage with a post! Try:

  • Tagging a colleague who’d appreciate the content
  • Dropping a quick comment – even a “Great post!” goes a long way
  • Sharing a post with a hashtag that fits the topic (#SteelIndustry, #Teamwork, #CoreValues, #SafetyFirst)

Small steps like these can help boost your confidence, grow your network, and increase visibility—for you, Olympic Steel, and our industry.
