Social Media Made Simple: Posting With Purpose

Your digital presence is already telling a story. Posting keeps that story active, connected and top-of-mind, even when you’re not online much.

Welcome to Article 4 of “Social Media Made Simple”, a series built to help you get more out of social media without overthinking it.

Articles 1-3 covered why using social media matters, how to get seen and how to make sure your profile tells the story you want it to. Now, let’s shift to posting with purpose, because what you share and when you share it plays a big role in your digital presence.

Why Posting Matters

Think of it this way: posting means your name shows up in more feeds, which signals to your network that you’re present, engaged and part of the conversation.

Social platforms tend to reward activity, prioritizing content from accounts that participate often. When you post, even once in a while, the algorithm takes note, which usually leads to:

  • More profile views
  • More impressions
  • More engagement opportunities for others

Posting also helps people understand what you do. A quick update about a project, an industry trend, something you learned or a team win gives your audience a look at your work and the value you bring. Remember, you want your social presence to work for you by telling your story and keeping you visible, even when you’re not in the room.

How Often Should You Post?

There’s no set rule, and you don’t need to post every day to have an impact. Aiming for one or two posts a month is a solid goal for connection and standing out professionally. Keep in mind that the more you engage, the more your name and content show up in people’s feeds.

Timing helps too. Posts shared between 8-10 a.m. or around lunch (noon-1 p.m.) typically get the most engagement.

What Should You Post?

Some of the most effective updates come from everyday moments that show what you’re up to—what you’re learning, noticing or contributing. You don’t need major announcements or formal captions to create strong posts.

Reminders

  • Hashtags and tags help your posts travel farther. Use a few simple hashtags that match the topic, and tag people or organizations when it makes sense. Think of hashtags as keywords that place your post in the right conversations. (ICYMI: Check out Article 2 for more about tagging and hashtags.)
  • Don’t overthink your captions. Keep them short and clear. Simple and genuine always works best.
  • Utilize the Olympic Steel Social Media Toolkit. You’ll find quick tips (including our brand hashtags), best practices, pre-written posts with images, FAQs and more.

The Takeaway

Posting with purpose doesn’t require a lot of time or planning. A couple quick posts a month to share something useful, recognize a colleague or reshare Company content will keep you visible in a way that’s simple and sustainable. It’s an easy way to expand your reach and keep your digital presence working for you, even when you’re not in the room.
